I need to try to go with something smaller to establish a stable revenue stream now that I'm doing this full time. Cogmind has done pretty well so far, but was also rather risky to take this far! Need a safer long-term plan... I plan to talk about this more some time after Cogmind hits 1.0 (since right now it's in Beta/EA for I'm not sure how long), but for now I can say that because gamedev is very time-consuming and also my only source of income now, in terms of large-scale projects I can only take on those which are likely to recover their costs. Times have certainly changed over the past few years and I'm not confident "X@COM reborn" can do that--there are so many X-Com clones and similar strategy games out there!<br /><br />It's also likely I'll make Cogmind 2, but one option I've been considering is IF Cogmind (1) is successful enough, I <i>might</i> be able to work on X@COM as a side project and continue releasing free versions. That would of course mean slower progress, but it's better than nothing.<br /><br />It's also a little difficult to jump start this project, because I would first need to spend a lot of time 1) applying to X@COM all the advancements Cogmind has made to the engine and 2) reimagining the setting and content so that I'm not infringing on IP. That was fine back when I was just a hobbyist releasing a free game with IP from a company that doesn't seem to mind fan games, but if I might one day put in a lot of money and effort to sell a much improved version, it'd need to be converted to my own concepts.<br /><br />Anyway, in short the answer is not now, but it's not off the table. It's just at the edge of the table and I keep eyeing it longingly xD<br /><br />(That said, I already have some good unique world building going on in Cogmind, and there's so much more of the story to explore there, so I'm eager to do that, too... I knew it would be a lot, but now I have numbers in my head and they aren't pretty!<br /><br />I can see the potential popularity, so there's hope for it eventually, but I need to build some other games to raise money first. Actually, X@COM has quite a few people who have played already, but I don't maintain a community around it like I do for Cogmind so there's no discussion. It's had a zillion downloads over the years :)<br /><br />But yeah my goal is to truly evolve the original UFO, because that's always been my favorite! So much more that can be done with it, even in the roguelike/ASCII medium.<br /><br />Unfortunately I don't have the time to devote to it as a hobby, so the time frame for development will depend on market factors, financial considerations, blah blah. You're making the best "turn-based tactic roguelike game" , no one do it before, nobody can imagine.<br /><br />Many people love Xcom games but no one imagine playing Xcom like this (roguelike). <br />Searching "Xcom roguelike" and i can make sure about this.(So sad because it still has not yet become popular)<br />But, you are making a revolution, from evolution of Xcom game today back in truly Xcom-Core.<br /><br />I know you're working hard on Cogmind. But i believe you also success with XComRL, when your experience put into XcomRL and make it better than ever.<br /><br />When this game releases, I'm sure it will sell well (100% Xcom-fans must have it in "Xcom Collection" (with unique style)).<br /><br />With normal gamers (who don't interested in "Roguelike text based"), they will feel comfortable with this Xcom New Graphic Engine and the GUI, because it easy to reach than any "Roguelike text based " games.<br />Like Cogmind, the graphic, GUI get better and better. Being swamped with work sucks :'(<br /><br />10101 is the modder who put this one together, and he did a fine job of it. Saving civilians is always a tough job... you can also save civvies and others in the Cataclysm mod, and some of them are armed!<br /><br />Soooo many more things I want to do with X@COM it makes me. It's nice to hear you say it's unlike any XCom game you've played before, since honestly I'd worry that it wouldn't be so interesting to today's environment given that we have OpenXCom, Xenonauts, XCOM 2, and more. There has been progress on improving the engine side of things, and much design progress in terms of ASCII innovations, both coming out of my current WIP game, <a href="http://www.gridsagegames.com/cogmind/" rel="nofollow">Cogmind</a>. These will benefit X@COM once the project is rebooted.<br /><br />There's a lot to play with as is, though nothing new since 2013.<br /><br />I also didn't realize that a couple years back when the project went on hiatus I actually put the prospective return date on the roadmap! I'll have to change that now :P. I originally planned for Cogmind to be a one- or two-year project, after which I'd get back to this one (so, around now), but later decided that it was worth turning Cogmind into an even bigger game, and it's become more like a four-year project!<br /><br />I also may not work on X@COM immediately after finishing Cogmind, instead taking on another medium-sized project first. Right now I'm trying to build a sustainable business that will allow me to continue developing full time, so I have to take that into consideration as well.<br /><br />Thanks for asking, though! I will update the roadmap now.
